Speaking of smoking + bikes, though I abhor secondhand cigarette smoke I incidentally find the relative prevalence of people smoking + biking in a place to be indicative of biking as a way to get around, not necessarily for recreational purposes:

Just like everyday clothes vs. lycra or upright vs. hunched-down it’s yet another signal of utilitarian biking. Though just like when I’m stuck behind someone smoking while walking I’ll definitely do a “smoker pass” on bike to get past it :p
