Bike Month in the Silicon Valley
Monday starts Bike Week in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. And Thursday, May 11, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) brags that “tens of thousands of regular and first-time Bay Area residents will bike to work for the 23rd Annual Bike to Work Day.” For those interested in joining in the festivities, the first step is to “take the pledge” to bike to work on that day and enter for a chance to win a 14-day dream cycling trip for two on Exodus Travels’ Cycle Indochina & Angkor!
Additionally, San Mateo will celebrate Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 10 at schools throughout the county. If your child goes to school in San Mateo County and you want to take part in Bike to School Day, it’s not too late to register by emailing tvkelly@smcoe.org. Afterwards, use the same address to let the county know how the event went and how many students participated.
And if you want resources for a bike program at your child’s San Mateo County School, visit the county’s official website for a list of resources and contacts.
On the afternoon of Bike to Work Day, the SVBC will host a “Bike Away from Work Bash” in Mountain View to help people celebrate their car-free commutes.
At the bash, the SVBC will honor two 2017 Bike Commuters of the Year for San Mateo and Santa Clara counties: Kate Gibson (San Mateo) and Stephan Rosner (Santa Clara). Both are active riders who demonstrate the benefits of bike commuting with their commitment and enthusiasm. Kate commutes by bike and train to her job at the Stanford campus, and even made a video (available on YouTube or embedded below) that shows what her commute experience is like.
