SPUR Talk: Developing the Oakland Waterfront
SPUR hosted a lunchtime forum today at its Oakland location to discuss the $1.5 billion Brooklyn Basin development. The panel, which was moderated by SPUR's Oakland director Robert Ogilvie, included Mike Ghielmetti of Signature Development Group, Matt Franklin of MidPen Housing, and Patricia Kernighan, who represented District 2 of Oakland during the authorization phase of the "Oak to Ninth" (now called Brooklyn Basin) waterfront housing development.

Bakersfield’s Full Moon Bike Ride Gives a Chance to Connect and Reflect
Once a month, parts of the growing cycling movement in Bakersfield are lit by moonlight during the Full Moon Bike Ride, a six-mile night ride that winds along a dark and dusty bike path near the dried-out Kern River. Cyclists of all types gather to pedal with friends and family. It is an informal community event that brings cyclists closer together, connects old friends, and can give a rider in Bakersfield a chance to pause and reflect about some of the positive—and sometimes negative— opportunities this city and county have lying ahead.

The Top 100 Neighborhoods for Bicycle Commuting Have a 21% Mode Share
City rankings of bike-friendliness -- while fabulous click-bait for their purveyors -- obscure dramatic differences among neighborhoods. Los Angeles doesn’t appear on any cycling top 10 lists, but the area to the north and west of the University of Southern California has a 20 percent bicycle mode share. The city of Miami Beach is no bike heavyweight, but around Flamingo Park, nearly one in every four trips to work is made on two wheels.
