This is Bike Week in Los Angeles, and there have been numerous Bike Week events, with a few more Bike Month events still on the way.

On Monday, Metro kicked off Bike Week with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Union Station Bike Hub.

The bike hub is under construction and expected to open this fall, on the north side of Union Station.

On Tuesday, Good Samaritan Hospital hosted its annual Blessing of the Bicycles. A multi-denominational team of clerics prayed for bicyclist safety.

On Thursday’s Bike to Work Day, L.A. City Councilmember Joe Buscaino biked from San Pedro to downtown Los Angeles. He was accompanied by an entourage including Buscaino staffer John Jones III, of the East Side Riders Bike Club, and Tamika Butler of the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition.

The whole bike commute was broadcast live on Facebook.

This morning Metro opened its second Bike Hub facility, located at 1630 N. Vine Street next to the Hollywood/Vine Metro Red Line Station. The facility provides 24/7 secure bike parking and is staffed from 7 to 11 a.m. weekdays for bike repairs and equipment.

The opening included the unveiling of a sticker star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dignitaries include Metro’s Cal Hollis, L.A. County Bicycle Coalition’s Zachary Rynew, Metro’s Tony Jusay, BikeHub.com’s Gene Oh, Metro’s Diego Cardoso, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Jeff Zarrinnam, and City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell

Metro now has bike hubs open in El Monte and Hollywood, with new hubs at Union Station and Culver City opening in 2017 and 2018. To sign up go to the Metro bike hub website or email metro [at] bikehub.com.

The bike celebrations continue next week with Bike Night at Union Station on Friday May 26.
