The newly opened stretch of protected bike lane on Valencia Street, from Cesar Chavez to Mission, got off to a bad start, with confused motorists parking all over it. Fortunately, the protected bike lane was open for business today, thanks to better signs and some cones.

Key SF Supervisor Commits to Protected Bike Lanes on Upper Market
Last week, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) launched a letter-writing drive to make sure protected bike lanes are part of SFMTA's Upper Market Street Safety Project from Octavia to the start of the Duboce bicycle path. It looks as if the campaign worked.

Long Beach Celebrates New Protected Bike Lanes On Artesia Boulevard
Long Beach celebrated its newest protected bike lane facility this morning. The Artesia Boulevard bike lanes extend half a mile from Atlantic Boulevard to Orange Avenue. Evidence That Split-Phase Signals Are Safer Than Mixing Zones for Bike Lanes
When DOT presented plans for a protected bike lane on Sixth Avenue, one point of contention was the design of intersections. How many intersections will get split-phase signals, where cyclists and pedestrians crossing the street get a separate signal phase than turning drivers? And how many will get "mixing zones," where pedestrians and cyclists negotiate the same space as turning drivers simultaneously?
