Plenty of Housing Bills Are Still in Play
Senator Scott Wiener's S.B. 50, the bill that would have allowed denser housing to be built near transit, has been put on ice for now, but it was only one housing bill among many. Over 200 housing bills had been introduced during this legislative session, and there are still enough of those moving through the process to produce confusion on the part of hapless reporters who might be trying to keep track.

All afternoon the Senate and Assembly had hosted “debates” on the bill, but those served mainly as an opportunity for grandstanding. Most minds had been made up, and the real negotiations, to convince the few undecided votes, was going on behind closed doors.

CA Legislative Update: ATP, Bikes, and Budget
California budget negotiations have moved into high gear with the naming of Senate and Assembly members to the bicameral budget conference committee. Leaders of the two bodies named five members each—up from three in previous years—and the conference committee held its first hearing this morning. The committee's job is to find agreement among the three competing state budget proposals before June 15, when it must submit a final version to both houses to be voted on. The final budget agreement must be signed by the governor by the end of the month.

PIRG: L.A.’s Proposed Freight Highway Tunnel Among Country’s Worst Projects
Yesterday, the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a national non-profit with state chapters throughout the country, released a report detailing the "12 biggest highway boondoggles" under study in the country. Not surprisingly, a California highway project made the list, the I-710 Tunnel Project in Los Angeles County.
