Turlock Reaches Out to Community for Ideas on Improving Biking, Walking
The statewide Active Transportation Program (ATP), the main source of funding for projects that encourage walking and biking in California, is in the midst of preparing for its next round of grants. Applications for a total of about $240 million will be accepted starting April 15, for projects that will be funded starting in 2019.

Legislative Update: CalBike Agenda for 2016
The California Bicycle Coalition, aka CalBike, continues to push for increasing funding for the Active Transportation Program, which currently receives $120 million per year. The bike coalition wants the state to add $100 million to the program, which sounds like a lot but is roughly one percent of the total transportation budget—even though bike and walking trips make up nearly 19 percent of all trips made in California. The state budget planning process, in which the two legislative houses and the governor negotiate a final budget by June, is one avenue for getting more funding.

Active Transportation Program 3rd Round: Guidelines, Workshops
The California Transportation Commission has released the draft guidelines [PDF] for the third round of the Active Transportation Program. Ongoing workshops to discuss the guidelines started a week ago and are continuing, with one this Friday, February 12, in Fresno; a last one will be held some time during the week of February 15 in Sacramento.

Turlock Gets ATP Funding for Bike Lanes, Sidewalks, Safer Intersections
Walking and bicycling in Turlock will become much safer now that the city was awarded more than a million dollars from the state Active Transportation Program (ATP) to improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Another Active Transportation Victory: Kern County Improves Transit Access
Rounding out our trio of Active Transportation Grant success stories is Kern County's. The rural county that is home to Bakersfield snagged $5.7 million in state funds to improve access to bus stops, adding sidewalks where they are missing in the surrounding community. Fresno Communities Take Street Safety Funding into Their Own Hands
As we've been learning more about the winning grants for the state's Active Transportation Program, a surprising theme is emerging. The program isn't just funding projects that improve the quality of life for people choosing to walk, ride their bike, or take transit. It is also inspiring communities to think about ways to improve their own transportation networks and push cities and local governments to get the funding to make those changes.
