Slow Streets and Great Highway Park victories in San Francisco, fire code disaster averted in Oakland

URGENT: Advocates want the Oakland City Council to pull Rule D105.2 (commonly referred to as the “26-foot rule”) from the fire Code [Council item S15] at Tuesday December 6's Council meeting and send it to the Public Safety Committee for discussion and revision.

San Francisco Assemblymember and former District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney was in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt earlier this month to attend the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27). Haney has long been an ally of the safe streets movement and a champion of better transit and protected bike lanes. Streetsblog spoke with him by phone about what he was learning in Egypt and what changes can be made in California and San Francisco to reduce emissions and help fulfill the goals set out by the convention.

The voters of San Francisco have again made it clear they value transit and safe streets. The question is when will the people who run the transit system--and the streets--finally adopt those same values
