Memorial for Wilbert Williams Calls on Caltrans to Fix SF’s Freeway Ramps
One year ago yesterday, 62-year-old Wilbert Williams was sleeping in a tent next to a Highway 80 off-ramp at Fifth and Harrison Streets at about 1 a.m. when he was run over and killed by a drunk SUV driver who veered off the road.

Who Do We Blame for the Next Death on the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge?
In a unanimous 11-0 vote, the Los Angeles City Council approved the city Bureau of Engineering's (BOE) single-sidewalk pedestrian-killer design for the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge. Though the item was not approved at the Public Works Committee last week, the City Council approved the item today with no public comment, after brief misleading characterizations by Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Mitch O'Farrell.

Ten years after Octavia Boulevard opened in the footprint of the former Central Freeway, the SFMTA has proposed a package of short-term safety fixes for people walking and biking, especially along the cross streets.

Walk SF Gives City a Mixed Score on Street Safety Progress
Walk SF today released its second annual Street Score Report Card [PDF], which it bills as the "only comprehensive review of the City’s progress towards improving pedestrian safety and walkability." The report is the first thorough attempt to assess how well the city has followed through on the mayor's 2013 Pedestrian Strategy.

Applause for L.A. City Council Motion to Rein in LAPD Ped Stings
Last Friday, May 1, Los Angeles City Council livability leaders introduced a motion [PDF] to get the city family to examine the effectiveness of LAPD's ongoing pedestrian sting operations. We would like to think that SBLA's recent article critiquing these stings paid off, but probably the excellent recent Los Angeles Times articles by Steve Lopez and Catherine Saillant got just a tad more exposure.
